Anita Linda and Rustica Carpio, Spain’s Las Palmas International Film Festival Best Actresses for “Lola”

One of the major and most prestigious film events in Europe, the Las Palmas Gran Canaria International Film Festival in Spain has made Philippines proud when it adjudged veterans Anita Linda and Rustica Carpio Ex Aqeou Best Actress for “Lola.”

“Lola,” a joint venture between Philippine Centerstage Productions and French Swift Productions, directed by 2009 Palm d’Or Cannes International Film Festival Best Director Brillante Mendoza, was honored with the Lady Harmiguada de Oro or the Grand Prize.

And we say that it’s only Manny Pacquiao o Charice Pempengco who could give us pride abroad?

In addition to the feathers in Mendoza’s cap is Odyssey Flores winning the Best Photography award for the same film.

Dante Mendoza, the other moniker of Brillante, was overwhelmed when he sent us text messages about his victory in Europe.

It was also Anita and Rustica’s shining moments, although in absentia.

According to Carpio, she was surprised when she received Saturdat midnight a congratulatory message from Mendoza and Ferdie Lapuz, the film’s supervising producer.

“I was naturally surprised and happy. Imagine, winning an acting award in a very prestigious international film gathering. It was something else. I would treasure this very much in my life,” exclaimed Rustica in a hastily phoned in talk.

Carpio, a doctoral degree holder in Literature and a professor par excellence, was still overwhelmed by her victory.

“But of course, I share my award with Ms. Anita Linda who is a very fantastic actress. She’s an icon already and I loved doing movies with her. I hope we can still do films together,” Carpio said hopelessly hoping.

Both Linda and Carpio play grandmothers to their respective grandsons, one, a victim, the other, a suspect.

“Lola” is one hell of a film about what justice is all about in this country—the slow grind of the wheel of justice and the feudal values that surround it.

During our hurried interview, Rustica, or rather Dr. Rustica Carpio, was set to sit down in a panel of interrogators for a dissertation defense at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
